History of Innovation
SPLC has always been on the leading edge of pulmonary and respiratory medicine. Our physicians are all board certified in three or more areas of medicine including internal, pulmonary, critical care and sleep medicine. In the 1990s, the area of sleep medicine began emerging. There was growing awareness of the connection between breathing and sleep disorders, particularly obstructive sleep apnea - the abnormal narrowing of breathing passageways in the throat while sleeping. New measuring techniques and therapies were becoming available. As a leader in this field, SPLC opened its Metropolitan Sleep Disorders Center in 1997 for diagnosing and treating sleep disorders. Among other things, the Center performs sleep studies in which patients stay overnight at our facility so their sleep breathing can be observed and even treated. Continuing our legacy of innovation, SPLC will soon have the first sleep clinic in the U.S. to offer home diagnostic kits for obstructive sleep apnea to applicable patients. Introduced in Israel and used throughout Europe already, this equipment has been highly successful in diagnosing sleep apnea on certain patients in their own homes. We are currently testing the kits here and SPLC expects to be offering this convenient and effective diagnostic program to patients sometime in the near future. |
